Brooklyn is mostly wood doors, and wood behaves differently from the steel apartment doors in a Manhattan elevator building: it swells in summer, shrinks in winter, and takes a lock in a way steel never does.

It is mostly single-family houses with driveways, garages and yards, so the lock work looks more like suburban New Jersey than a Manhattan apartment line.
